Connecting with nature can do wonders for your mental and emotional health. Hiking through the woods and mountains, taking some time to swim, resting beside a body of water, and even just looking at the stars are all great ways to heal the soul and challenge your body. Whether you want to appreciate nature or offer yourself an adventure that you cannot have anywhere else, you should explore these key locations in the Smoky Mountains.
One of the best places that you can ever hike is at Grotto Falls in the Smoky Mountains. The hike itself is 2.6 miles round-trip. It is considered to be an easy hike with a difficulty rating of 3.77. That means that both professional hikers and those just looking for a good walk can receive a good workout from it. This trail leads you through an old and gorgeous forest before leading you to the falls themselves. What makes this waterfall so special is that it is the only one in the Smoky Mountains that you can actually walk behind. This hike can also connect with other trails, so if you still feel the drive, you can prolong your adventure.
You should visit Clingmans Dome to see views of the Smoky Mountains that you can't get anywhere else. It's the highest point in Tennessee with an observational tower that offers a 360-degree viewpoint all around the area. This mountain top is also the third highest mountain that rests east of Mississippi. Hiking this trail to reach the tower can be quite steep, so if you want a hard workout, then aiming for that tower is an excellent idea. Otherwise, you can still enjoy the views at the tip of the mountain. There are plenty of vacation rentals around the area, so you will most likely be able to find a spot to stay in Tennessee if you wish to only explore that area of the Smoky Mountains.
Alum Cave TrailAnother hike that you should consider is the Alum Cave Trail. This hike is a moderate length, fairly easy trail about 4.4 miles long. It offers some incredible views of the thick forest, and if you visit during early summer you can enjoy the prolific rosebay rhododendron at the start of the trail. It also features peaceful and trickling streams that run along it. Finally, the rock formation that creates the cave is worth viewing.
