How to Keep Your Testosterone Up as You Age

Testosterone is a hormone that plays a necessary role in men’s health. It naturally declines with age, but younger men can suffer from low testosterone as well. Unhealthy diet and lifestyle, as well as other factors, might be to blame.

Testosterone drops with age, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit there helplessly watching this happen. There’s a lot you can do to naturally boost your testosterone, helping you stay fit and healthy as you grow older.  Exercise is a huge factor that you might already be putting some time into (as you should), but there are also some other ways to ensure that you keep those testosterone levels up.

1. Eating Healthy Foods

Healthy foods means healthy hormones, but the definition of “healthy eating” has been argued about for a long time. From vegan to paleo, there’s an advocate for just about every type of diet out there, and it can be difficult to know who to listen to.

Luckily, following an extreme diet isn’t the route to raising testosterone anyway. What you want to aim for is a healthy balance between carbs, fats, and protein. The key is eating the right varieties of each.

Stay away from gluten-heavy grains and instead focus on getting your carbs from yams, carrots, potatoes and other root vegetables.

When it comes to fats, stick to nutritious sources like olive oil and avocado, which have been shown to help boost testosterone in studies.

Ensure that no more than 30 percent of your total calories are coming from healthy proteins like chicken and fish.

2. Taking Supplements

There are a few supplements that may be able to help raise testosterone along with healthy diet and exercise. These include:

  • D-Aspartic acid
  • Fenugreek
  • Vitamin D
  • Ginger
  • DHEA
  • Zinc
  • Ashwagandha

Although these supplements can be helpful, it’s important to talk to your doctor before you begin taking anything. Everyone is different, and some supplements can interact with certain medications. Seeking medical advice is always wise.
